GEBEL EL SILSELEH: THE QUARRIES EAST AND WEST
Gebel el Silsileh (“Mountain of the Chain”) lies north of Aswan near Kom Ombo. The sandstone provided the building materials for Luxor and Karnak Temples. Both sides of the Nile were quarried; the eastern quarry is still in use. Here the water Gods: Hapi, Sobel, Heqet as well as Amun-Re and Ptah were worshipped. The remains of graffiti, votive shrines and unfinished statues belong to the reins of Hatshepsut, Tutmosis III, Amenhotep II, Ramses II and Ramses III.
